2 solons to lose Congress seats

Gil C. Cabacungan Jr.MANILA, Philippines—The House of Representatives Electoral Tribunal (HRET) is poised to kick out two lawmakers from the Batasang Pambansa complex this week after losing their respective poll protest cases.
The HRET order on Malabon-Navotas Rep. Alvin Sandoval and Laguna Rep. Dan Fernandez to yield their seats would take effect this week.
The HRET has declared Sandovals’ rival, Josephine Veronique Lacson, as the rightful winner in the 2007 elections in the lone district of Malabon-Navotas.
Sandoval, however, could still seek a reversal of his case. Lacson, the wife of An Waray Rep. Florencio “Bem” Noel, won by 542 votes over Sandoval.
In the case of Fernandez, a former movie actor married to actress Sheila Israel, has already lost his appeal to the HRET to reverse its decision declaring him ineligible to represent Laguna’s first district due to lack of residency.
Fernandez has elevated his case to the Supreme Court but it has yet to issue a restraining order to prevent House Speaker Prospero Nograles from implementing the HRET ruling this week.
